On
16 September 2001, Kelly Wood and I belatedly helped Dan Millar celebrate
his 40th birthday. I cooked for Dan a modest vegetarian dinner consisting
of oven-baked carrots, sautéed mushrooms, and cheese-stuffed potatoes.
Kelly made him a black forest birthday cake. It was a humble celebration
for an outwardly modest but inwardly complex person.
